Main Duties

This group performs some or all of the following duties :

Furniture finishers

  • Set up and run finishing machines, or hand-finish furniture.
  • Using a brush or a spray gun, stain or finish wood to the desired colour using stains, paints, or other materials.
  • To get the required finish, use toners, highlights, glazes, or shaders.
  • Use lacquer or other sealants to finish the job.
  • Using hand and power tools, decorate wood surfaces or mark surfaces to produce antique or other effects.
  • Clean and shine your furniture.

To prepare metal furniture for a finish, sand it down and spray it with paint or other materials.

Furniture refinishers

  • Steel wool, sandpaper, and solvents are used to remove previous finishes from wood surfaces.
    Wood filler and sanding are used to smooth out gouges.
  • To achieve the original finish, match the colours and apply the proper finish to the stripped wood.
  • Refinished surfaces should be polished and waxed.
  • Prepare metal surfaces for coating by sanding or grinding them, and then painting them with an electrostatic technique, a spray gun, or other painting equipment.
  • Make simple furniture repairs.
  • It is possible that you will undertake the duties of a furniture finisher.

    Employment Requirements

    • Some secondary school education is required.
    • College, high school or industry courses in furniture finishing or refinishing may be required.
    • On-the-job training is provided.
